Starting in September 2008, ‘Creative Space’
was a three month pilot arts on prescription project,
offering people over the age of 50, suffering with mental
health problems the chance to take part in regular supported
art classes.
Vale Royal Borough Council already offers an exercise
on referral scheme and in partnership with Wearpurple
Arts, Age Concern Cheshire and Cheshire County Councils
Art Service were keen to pilot a project offering creative
activities to people suffering with mental health problems.
The project ran in Winsford, Vale Royal for twelve weeks
and gave 13 people over the age of 50 the opportunity
to attend a weekly supported art class. The classes
were suitable for beginners and covered a range of basic
art & craft techniques, printing, drawing, collage
& painting.
The aim of the Creative Space - arts on prescription
project was to improve people’s wellbeing and
self esteem through participation in creative activities.
Encouraging people to feel better about themselves,
their lives and more open to outside opportunities.
The findings and feedback were extremely positive with
peoples well being increased on average by 54% after
taking part in the twelve week project.
